2023 Pinot Noir, Josef Chromy

Tasmania, Australia

Josef Chromy Wines is one of Tasmania’s most iconic wineries, founded by Czech-born Josef Chromy, a post-war immigrant who became a visionary in Australian viticulture. Located just south of Launceston, the estate is at the forefront of premium cool-climate winemaking, consistently producing wines that reflect the purity, elegance, and vibrancy of Tasmania’s pristine environment.

Elegant yet expressive, the 2023 Pinot Noir from Josef Chromy is a benchmark Tasmanian red, perfumed, vibrant, and full of charm. Aromatically captivating, it opens with a burst of red fruit: juicy raspberry, ripe strawberry, and sour cherry mingle with notes of pomegranate and a subtle lift of rose petals. Hints of sweet spice and gentle oak warmth add dimension without overshadowing the fruit. The palate is sleek and precise with crunchy acidity and moderate tannins that frame a concentrated core of red berries, offering both vibrancy and depth. A fine thread of spice and minerality runs through to a long, polished finish. This is a Pinot Noir that balances richness and finesse with clarity and poise – drinkable now, but with the structure and complexity to reward cellaring through 2033.

Josef Chromy Wines stands as a beacon of excellence in Tasmania’s cool-climate wine scene, embodying a story of resilience, craftsmanship, and pioneering spirit. Founded in 2007 by Czech immigrant Josef Chromy, the estate reflects the remarkable journey of its namesake, who fled war-torn Europe in 1950 and built a legacy in Australian food and wine through hard work, vision, and dedication.

Located just south of Launceston in northern Tasmania, the Josef Chromy estate is renowned for producing elegant, expressive wines that showcase the purity and precision for which Tasmania is famed. The winery’s focus is firmly on cool-climate varietals, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and sparkling wines forming the core of its critically acclaimed portfolio.

The estate’s single-vineyard philosophy, combined with meticulous vineyard management and modern winemaking techniques, allows the wines to reflect both variety and site with clarity and finesse. Vineyards span across the Tamar Valley and Coal River Valley, offering a diversity of soil types and microclimates that contribute to complexity and balance in the finished wines.

Josef Chromy has become one of Tasmania’s most awarded wine producers, regularly earning 95+ point scores from top critics and appearing on Australia’s top wine lists.

Each parcel of fruit is hand-picked at optimal conditions and placed in open-top fermenters with varying degrees of whole bunch or destemmed whole berries. The fruit is cooled down and allowed to cold soak in tank in order to extract colour and aroma compounds prior to the onset of fermentation. Some ferments are allowed to begin naturally and some are inoculated with cultured yeast. Regular pump overs during fermentation take place to optimise the extraction of aromas, flavours and tannins. Post fermentation, the wines are pressed to tank and allowed to settle before being racked off into French oak barrels, of which about 25% are new each year. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels with regular monitoring and tasting to evaluate each parcel’s attributes. After an ageing period in oak of about 8 months, the wine is taken out of barrels, and the final blend is created.
