2016 Abednego GSM, Grant Burge
Barossa Valley, Australia
The Abednego completes the Icon trio from Grant Burge Wines, sitting alongside the highly awarded Meshach and Shadrach which are Grant’s flagship Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is 100% Barossa using fruit sourced from Grant’s own vineyards with an average age of 110 years. The old vines deliver fruit with incredible concentration and depth giving the resultant wine the ability to develop over many years. The iconic 2016 Abednego is a richly flavoured and elegantly structured wine with a beautifully balanced palate, complemented by flavours of plums, spice and liquorice with hints of vanilla. The dense, mouth-filling mid-palate and long, textural finish combine to create a wine that is rich and elegant. Drink now to 2035.
The origin of the name of this wine comes from the fact that Abednego in Hebrew means the ‘Servant of Nego’, the Babylonian god of wisdom. Abednego, with Shadrach and Meshach, were cast into the fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar in 600BC. Grant Burge named his flagship and icon Shiraz Meshach (after his great grandfather Meshach Burge 1843-1942), and the icon Cabernet Sauvignon Shadrach (inspired by the story). This wine is Abednego to completer the trio with a trio of the Barossa’s finest grape varieties.

Grant Burge comes from a long line of winemakers in Barossa that date back to the mid 1800’s. Grant is the fifth generation of this winemaking dynasty and formed Grant Burge Wines in 1988 with his wife, Helen.
Grant Burge’s winemaking team is led by Chief Winemaker, Craig Stansborough. While he believes that attention to detail is of the utmost importance when crafting beautiful Barossa wines, the team is blessed with fantastic fruit that requires polishing and shaping, rather than heavy-handed manipulation in the winery.
The breadth of the Grant Burge range is wide-ranging, from sparkling and rosé wines to classic Shiraz, Grenache and fortified wines. However, the winemaking style that links them all is the commitment to enhancing flavour, generosity and drinkability.
As well as big and bold reds for the drinkers who love this style, Grant Burge has also curated a selection of elegant and stylish wines that cater to drinkers who appreciate this style. The versatility of the region is one of its greatest strengths.
With many iconic wines in the range including the ‘The Holy Trinity’ GSM or 98 point scoring Meshach Shiraz, Grant Burge wines have continued to gather much-deserved acclaim.
Not only has the Meshach 2012 been given an incredible 98 points by James Halliday, it was also recently awarded the Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 and has been list on the Barossa Grape and Wine Association’s inaugural Barossa Super 100 Classification, a list of the most sought after and collectable wines in Barossa.
