1999 Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Riserva, Fontodi - Double Magnum

Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy

This double-magnum presents with a deep garnet core and slight tawny rim, an elegant sign of maturity and depth. On the nose, wild cherry and black plum mingle with dried herbs, forest floor and fine tobacco spice. The palate is lush yet refined, a cascade of red and black fruit flowing into savoury layers of leather, dried orange peel and crushed stone. The tannins are mellow but still firm enough to anchor the texture, while a bright acidity lifts the finish into a grand, lingering echo of iron-rich earth and autumn leaves. Bold enough to impress, graceful enough to endure.

For when: The table is stretching, the guests are lingering, and you reach for something that says this moment matters.
Pairs with: Slow-roasted lamb, rich wild boar ragù, or well-aged Pecorino with fig jam.
If this wine were: A Tuscan cloister at dusk, ancient, serene, and resonating with quiet power.

Crafted on the steep hillside vineyards of Fontodi in Panzano, Tuscany, this 1999 Vigna del Sorbo is a testament to Sangiovese’s timeless elegance. A blend drawn from vines planted on limestone‐ and clay-rich soils, vinified with care and aged to perfection, it now enters a refined chapter, still youthful at heart but richly layered with two decades of evolution. A collector’s dream in majestic format.

In the heart of Chianti Classico’s famed Conca d’Oro, the “golden shell” of Panzano, lies Fontodi, a benchmark estate where craftsmanship and nature coexist in perfect balance. Owned by the Manetti family since 1968, Fontodi carries a lineage of artistry that predates its wines; for centuries, the Manettis have been master producers of terracotta in nearby Ferrone. That same precision and devotion to material truth that shapes their terracotta now informs their winemaking, a meticulous, almost meditative approach that has elevated Fontodi into one of Tuscany’s most admired estates.

Under Giovanni Manetti, who has led the estate since 1980, Fontodi has become synonymous with purity of fruit and integrity of place. The 90 hectares of organically farmed vineyards, 90% planted to Sangiovese, are bathed in sunlight from their south-facing slopes and refreshed by cool night air. Deep, well-drained galestro soils encourage the vines to reach down for nourishment, yielding grapes that capture both concentration and finesse. Biodynamic principles now guide the vineyard work, reflecting Giovanni’s belief that great wine begins with living soil.

The resulting wines from the graceful Chianti Classico to the powerful Vigna del Sorbo and the iconic Flaccianello della Pieve are expressions of quiet mastery: elegant, structured, and enduring. Fontodi remains a true embodiment of modern Chianti, deeply rooted in tradition, yet always reaching higher.

After picking, the grapes were carried to the Fontodi winery and carefully selected on sorting tables. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with indigenous yeasts and lasted for around two weeks. After fermentation, the wine was racked into 225-litre French oak barriques, a mixture of Tronçais and Allier, where it underwent malolactic fermentation and remained for 18 months. It then spent an additional six months in second-use barriques before bottling. Finally, the wine matured in the bottle in the Fontodi cellars for six months before release.
