1975 Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos, Oremus, 500ml

Tokaj, Hungary

The Golden Time Capsule.

A treasure from Hungary’s most storied vineyards, the 1975 Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos from Oremus is a glimpse into liquid history, a wine where age has transformed sweetness into pure harmony. Deep amber in colour, it opens with an exquisite bouquet of dried apricot, orange marmalade, honey, toffee and black tea, layered with notes of walnut, tobacco leaf and warm spice. The palate is rich and velvety, yet astonishingly balanced with the sweetness seamlessly woven into bright, resilient acidity. It glides toward a long, nutty, endlessly layered finish that lingers like a fading echo of gold. Mature Tokaji at its most hauntingly beautiful.

For when: the evening calls for reverence and a slow pour.
Pairs with: blue cheese, crème brûlée, or a moment of quiet reflection.
If this wine were an heirloom, it’d be a pocket watch passed through generations, glowing, intricate, eternal.

Oremus, now part of the Vega Sicilia family, stands among the crown jewels of Tokaj. Located in the heart of the Tokaji region, the estate’s history stretches back to the 16th century, and its name has long been synonymous with Hungary’s fabled Aszú wines, the “wine of kings, king of wines.”

Crafted from botrytised (noble rot) grapes handpicked berry by berry, Tokaji Aszú is blended according to “puttonyos,” the traditional measure of sweetness and intensity. The 5 Puttonyos level strikes the perfect balance between opulence and structure. The 1975 vintage, harvested from volcanic, loess-rich slopes under ideal noble rot conditions, was exceptional, producing Aszú wines of remarkable depth and longevity. Aged for decades in Oremus’s ancient labyrinth of oak casks, this bottle is living history: a golden relic of craftsmanship, patience, and the timeless magic of Tokaj.

Few names embody the grandeur and mystique of Tokaj quite like Oremus. With roots tracing back to the 16th century, this historic estate stands as one of Hungary’s true wine treasures, a symbol of Tokaj’s golden legacy and its enduring power to captivate. In 1993, Vega Sicilia, Spain’s most revered winery, acquired Oremus and ushered in a renaissance that combined centuries of Hungarian craftsmanship with modern precision and vision.

Nestled in the heart of Tokaj-Hegyalja, Oremus cultivates steep, south-facing vineyards on volcanic and loess soils, an ancient landscape shaped by the Bodrog and Tisza rivers. These unique conditions, together with the region’s autumn mists, create the perfect environment for Botrytis cinerea (noble rot), the natural magic behind Tokaji’s legendary Aszú wines.

Oremus works exclusively with native grape varieties, Furmint, Hárslevelű, Zéta, and Sárgamuskotály, each contributing its own nuance of structure, perfume, and longevity. Every Aszú berry is picked individually by hand, macerated in late-harvest base wine, and aged slowly in traditional 136-litre Hungarian oak casks deep within the estate’s labyrinthine cellars, where humidity and temperature remain constant year-round.

The range reflects the estate’s mastery of Tokaj’s many expressions, from the ethereal freshness of the Mandolás Furmint to the layered majesty of the Aszú 5 and 6 Puttonyos and the near-mythical Eszencia. In each, Oremus captures what makes Tokaj so singular: a balance of richness and light, sweetness and structure, heritage and renewal. It is not just one of the region’s finest producers; it is the living heartbeat of Tokaj’s centuries-old golden wine tradition.
