2021 Route 111, Troupis Winery

Nemea, Peloponnese, Greece

Dark-fruited, expressive, and full of quiet power, Route 111 takes you on a journey through the heart of the Peloponnese, from the sunlit hills of Nemea to the cool slopes of Aigialeia. A 50/50 blend of Agiorgitiko and Mavrodaphne, it opens with aromas of black cherry, plum, and dried fig, layered with hints of clove, rosemary, and a touch of wild earth. On the palate, it’s generous yet refined with ripe red fruit wrapped in velvety tannins, lifted by mountain freshness from vineyards sitting 640 metres above sea level. Extended ageing has softened the structure and deepened the flavour, leading to a long, savoury finish of spice and smoke.

For when: Dinner’s slow, the fire’s low, and conversation lingers.
Pairs with: Chargrilled steak, meaty casseroles, or aged Greek cheeses.
If this wine were: A winding mountain road at sunset - bold, scenic, and full of unexpected turns.

From their high-altitude vineyards in Mantinia, the Troupis family continues to redefine Greek wine with creativity and authenticity. Route 111 is their ode to the Peloponnese, a symbolic blend uniting two of the region’s great red grapes: Mavrodaphne from the cool slopes of Aigialeia and Agiorgitiko from the warmer hills of Nemea. Both sites sit at elevation, where rocky soils and mountain air yield fruit of purity and depth.

High in the central Peloponnese, surrounded by mountains and cool breezes, Troupis Winery is redefining what Moschofilero can be. Though officially founded in 2010, the Troupis family had been cultivating their own vineyards in Mantinia since the 1970s, long before the grape became a symbol of Greek elegance. Today, the estate remains proudly family-run, a small, dynamic winery dedicated to crafting authentic, expressive wines that honour both land and tradition.

The vineyards lie on the Mantinia plateau, one of Greece’s highest and coldest PDO zones, sitting between 660 and 800 metres above sea level. The combination of altitude, poor soils, and a Mediterranean climate with continental influences allows for slow, even ripening, giving the wines striking freshness and aromatic clarity. Here, the pink-skinned Moschofilero grape thrives, producing wines that range from delicately floral whites to textured, skin-contact expressions and sparkling bottlings.

Guided by a philosophy of minimal intervention and curiosity, the Troupis family works with indigenous yeasts, extended skin contact, and a range of vessels from stainless steel and concrete to acacia and ceramic amphorae. The result is a portfolio of wines that are vibrant, individual, and deeply tied to their mountainous terroir. Troupis has quickly become one of Greece’s most exciting boutique producers, both a guardian of tradition and a bold innovator shaping the next chapter of Mantinia’s winemaking story.
