2019 Rapsani Old Vines, Dougos Winery
Thessaly, Greece
Graceful yet powerful, Rapsani Old Vines 2019 is a wine that speaks softly but leaves an echo. Deep ruby in colour, it opens with aromas of sun-warmed cherries, dried herbs, forest floor and a trace of spice. The palate unfolds slowly, revealing layers of red plum, pomegranate and wild thyme framed by fine-grained tannins and a savoury, iron-tinged minerality drawn from the schist soils of Mount Olympus. Extended ageing has added polish and poise, weaving its freshness and structure into something seamless, refined, and quietly commanding.
For when: You want a wine with history, harmony, and heart.
Pairs with: Grilled lamb, roast aubergine, or earthy lentil stews with herbs.
If this wine were: A weathered marble statue, timeless, elegant, and carved by the elements.
At the foot of Mount Olympus, Thanos and Louiza Dougos craft some of Greece’s most soulful and site-driven wines. Founded in 1991, the family estate draws on decades of viticultural expertise and a deep connection to native varieties. The Rapsani Old Vines is made from organically grown Xinomavro, Krasato, and Stavroto, cultivated on iron-rich schist soils between 450 and 700 metres above sea level. The poor, stony terrain and lack of irrigation produce small, concentrated berries, while gentle winemaking and extended ageing in lightly toasted oak allow the vineyard’s voice to shine.

Nestled at the foothills of Mount Olympus, between myth and mountain air, Dougos Winery is one of Greece’s most distinctive family estates. Founded in 1991 by Thanos and Louiza Dougos, the winery marries scientific precision with a deep respect for tradition. Thanos, a renowned viticulturist, and Louiza, the winemaker, craft wines that reflect both the purity of their high-altitude vineyards and the quiet power of the Tempi Valley’s landscape.
The vineyards, planted between 450 and 700 metres, rest on iron-rich schist soils, poor in nutrients yet ideal for producing small, concentrated berries. These soils, combined with the cooling breezes descending from Mount Olympus, create wines of striking freshness, balance, and minerality. All farming is organic and dry-farmed, respecting the natural rhythms of the land and its biodiversity.
Dougos specialises in indigenous Greek varieties such as Xinomavro, Krasato, Stavroto, Limniona, and Assyrtiko, alongside select international grapes that thrive in this unique terroir. The wines are defined by elegance, restraint, and authenticity, crafted with minimal intervention and aged in lightly toasted oak to preserve varietal purity.
With production rarely exceeding 70,000 bottles per year, Dougos remains a true artisan winery, one that captures the essence of Olympus in every glass: wines of altitude, honesty, and quiet beauty.
