2010 1086 Rose, Nyetimber
Sussex, United Kingdom and England
Nyetimber stands at the forefront of English sparkling wine, renowned for its dedication to crafting wines of exceptional quality and elegance. The estate’s flagship, 1086 Rosé, represents the pinnacle of this commitment. Named after the year Nyetimber was first recorded in the Domesday Book, this prestige cuvée is produced exclusively in outstanding vintages from the finest estate-grown grapes. The 2010 vintage, a blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, showcases the meticulous selection and craftsmanship that define Nyetimber’s approach. With extended lees ageing and careful cellar maturation, 1086 Rosé exemplifies the estate’s pursuit of excellence and its role in elevating English sparkling wine on the global stage.
The 2010 Nyetimber 1086 Rosé presents a luminous copper-rose hue, indicative of its maturity and depth. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of wild strawberry, blackcurrant, and elderberry, interwoven with hints of juniper, Earl Grey tea, and brioche. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured, with silky phenolics and juicy acidity. Flavours of red cherry, rhubarb, and lemon zest are complemented by a mineral undertone, leading to a long, refined finish. This rosé is a testament to the complexity and ageing potential of English sparkling wines.

Nyetimber was the first producer to make English sparkling wine exclusively from the ‘Champagne varieties’: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Based in the heart of West Sussex, on what is regarded as a perfect site for the production of sparkling wine. The estate was established in 1988, with just over 14 hectares planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. The ever-increasing demand for Nyetimber’s sparkling wines led to considerable vineyard expansion from 2006 onwards. Nyetimber now has several carefully selected vineyards across Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, with a total of 160 hectares under vine.
The estate is owned by Dutchman Eric Hereema who, alongside winemaker Cherie Spriggs, has installed an impressive cellar. All their grapes are estate-grown and pressed parcel by parcel by a Magnum press imported from Épernay in Champagne. Nyetimber’s vineyard holdings are planted mostly over limestone, which is favoured for its good drainage and low vigour. The vines are rigorously managed to ensure excellent flavour concentration, and de-leafing is carried out to maximise the exposure of the grapes to sunlight. Cherie Spriggs won the IWC ‘Sparkling Winemaker of the Year’ in 2018. She is the first winemaker outside of Champagne and the first woman to achieve this impressive accolade.
