2019 VIK, Viña VIK
Maipo Valley, Chile
VIK is a remarkable visionary Bordeaux style blend and can be considered as a Chilean ‘First’ Growth.
Elegant, silky and complex, with captivating aromatic intensity and freshness. The ripe, expressive fruit flavours are layered with violet and spice through to lasting finish full of finesse.
Created by Alex and Carrie VIK, the vineyard was born amidst the foothills of the Andes mountains, within the Millahue Valley, named “Lugar de Oro” or “Golden Place” by the native Mapuche people: 4,300 hectares of astonishing Chilean wilderness where they planted over 327 hectares of vines. Holism is the concept that best reflects the VIK spirit. It is the perfect union of humans and nature as an integrated whole. The holistic wines are the result of a magnificent, dynamic terroir and the best winegrowing and winemaking techniques and practices, coupled with superlative work to protect and enhance the environment, concern for human and social development, and a focus on art and architecture. Cristian Vallejo, Vik’s chief winemaker, is considered as a “terroir purist”, inventing its own concepts of barroir (barrels toasted with wood of roble trees that have fallen on their lands) and amphoir (amphoras made with clay from Millahue).

Notable Awards
98 Points, James Suckling. “The 2019 VIK is silky and complex with a voluptuous expression of currants and sweet berries with some high-grade, creamy oak, the wine is not shy on Chilean cabernet’s racier characteristics – in this case, sun-dried tomato leaf or red chili pepper, which knit well with the notes of currant and chocolate.”

Viña VIK was established by Alex and Carrie Vik in 2004, who had a vision to create world-class vineyards, producing exceptional wines. After two years of scientific research, they acquired 4,400 hectares in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Millahue, in the Cachapoal Valley. The name Millahue, translating to “Place of Gold” in Chile’s indigenous language, aptly captures the essence of their chosen location. With a dedicated team of winemakers, climatologists, geologists, vine growers, and agronomists, they meticulously developed an exceptional terroir and planted 327 hectares of carefully selected varieties. Winemaker Cristian Vallejo follows a minimal intervention approach, with hand-harvesting and natural fermentations to ensure each wine showcases this outstanding terroir and his wines are elegant, voluptuous, complex and balanced. Viña VIK is ranked third among the World’s Best 10 Vineyards.
The grapes were carefully sorted and vinified in the gravity fed cellar. Fermentation took place with wild yeasts in small, temperature controlled stainless steel tanks of 15,000 litres, followed by malolactic conversion. The wine was aged in French barriques for 26 months in a combination of used barrels, recycled barrels and ‘barroir’, barrels that were made at the VIK winery.
