2018 Basket Press Shiraz, Rockford
Barossa Valley, Australia
One of the world’s truly iconic wines. Rockford’s Basket Press Shiraz represents the true style of Rockford and it draws heavily on the wisdom and shared knowledge of previous generations of Australian winemakers and recognises that at the heart of every great wine are great vineyards.
Basket Press Shiraz is made using equipment from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, before aging in a collection of seasoned American and French oak hogsheads and large casks for two years. After bottling the wine is sealed under the highest quality cork. This approach enables Rockford to make the kind of traditional, soft, deeply coloured, earthy Australian red wine that Robert O’Callaghan first became fascinated by as a budding winemaker in the 1960s.

97 points Huon Hooke, The Real Review
"Very good deep red/purple colour. The bouquet is shy and reserved, but clean and correct, revealing some coconut after a while in the glass. It has very good depth of fruit and abundant soft, fine tannins that run the length of the palate. Full-bodied and gently chocolaty, with lovely soft texture and a savoury kind of richness, the finish long, with an appropriate touch of firmness at the end. Seamless texture and flavour. The tannins are actually quite full, but so well integrated they are barely noteworthy even as they do their job. Long, long carry. A very fine and stylish Barossa shiraz. Drink 2021-2033."

Rockford is a small boutique wine producer based in South Australia’s Barossa Valley. Founder and winemaker, Robert O’Callaghan belongs to a genre of visionary winemakers that include Max Schubert, Peter Lehmann, Jeffrey Grosset, Brian Croser and David Hohnen. His protégés include Chris Ringland and Dave Powell. Rockford wines have had a profound influence on winemaking philosophy and wine style in the Barossa.
Providing the inspiration for a whole generation of winemakers ‘the Rockford school’ embraces the inherent qualities of old vine Shiraz: the physicality of winemaking where muscle and personal touch transform process into an art-form; the traditional tools of trade (basket press, open fermenter) and the complementary nuances of American and French oak maturation.
Best known for the Rockford Basket Press Shiraz, Rockford also produces a handful of top-quality wines from old vine fruit sourced from selected growers across the Barossa Valley.
