2008 ‘The Pinnacle’ Shiraz, Dalwhinnie
Pyrenees, Australia
Inky garnet in colour, this is a Shiraz of power and grace. The nose opens with layers of blackberry, plum, and blueberry compote, laced with dark chocolate, pepper, and a whisper of graphite. The palate is concentrated yet poised with rich black fruit unfolding into notes of spice, mocha, and smoked earth. Silky tannins and perfectly integrated oak carry the flavours to a long, seamless finish that feels both muscular and elegant.
For when: the evening calls for something rare, deep, and unforgettable.
Pairs with: slow-roasted beef, venison, or a dark chocolate tart.
Dalwhinnie’s The Pinnacle represents the summit of the estate’s craft. Sourced from low-yielding vines in the cool Pyrenees ranges of Victoria, it’s only produced in exceptional vintages. The 2008 showcases the site’s stony soils and high-altitude intensity, combining richness with minerality in a way that few Australian Shiraz can match.

Dalwhinnie is one of Victoria’s most iconic vineyards, with an outstanding reputation for its super-premium Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Hailed by critics and wine lovers alike, Dalwhinnie has been growing grapes for nearly 40 years and is now a fully mature vineyard, producing wines that are distinctive, elegant and reflect the benefit of a dry grown vineyard.
Dalwhinnie occupies a unique position in the heart of the Pyrenees region of Western Victoria, near the village of Moonambel, where it exists as a natural amphitheatre nestled among the ranges. But it is the hills and sedimentary soils of the Pyrenees – the terroir – which are a vital factor in the vineyard’s uniqueness.
Labelled ‘the highest and most remote vineyard in the Pyrenees’, Dalwhinnie hang their hat on Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz wines that have formidable cellaring potential. These wines have captured the attention of Australia’s elite wine commentators over the past 25 years, and recent vertical tastings have shown the wine’s ability to shine and reflect this unique site with bottle age.
A marriage of vineyard site, soil, climate and suitable varieties has helped to continue the fine reputation of Dalwhinnie as one of Australia’s significant vineyard sites.
