1995 Aszu Tokaji 5 Puttonyos, Oremus
Tokaj, Hungary
The Golden Revival.
A luminous expression from one of Tokaj’s most historic estates, the 1995 Oremus Aszú 5 Puttonyos captures the moment when tradition met modern precision. Deep amber in the glass, it opens with aromas of dried apricot, orange marmalade, honeycomb and toasted almond, layered with notes of caramel, tea leaf and candied citrus. The palate is luscious and silky with waves of sweet fruit balanced by vivid acidity and a distinctive volcanic minerality that gives the wine lift and focus. Complex yet graceful, it finishes long and resonant, with honeyed fruit and spice echoing softly into the distance.
For when: you want to taste time and craftsmanship in perfect harmony.
Pairs with: foie gras, tarte tatin, or Roquefort and walnuts.
If this wine were a piece of music, it’d be a violin sonata,  rich, elegant, and timelessly moving.
Oremus, one of Tokaj’s oldest and most revered producers, has been crafting Aszú wines since the 16th century. After its acquisition by Spain’s Vega Sicilia family in the early 1990s, the estate entered a new golden era, combining centuries of Hungarian heritage with modern precision in the vineyard and cellar.
Situated on the volcanic slopes of Tolcsva and Sátoraljaújhely, Oremus works exclusively with native Tokaj varieties, Furmint, Hárslevelű, Zéta, and Sárgamuskotály. The Aszú wines are produced from grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea (noble rot), painstakingly hand-picked and macerated in late-harvest base wine before long ageing in ancient oak cellars. The 1995 vintage marked a pivotal year: one of the first produced under Vega Sicilia’s stewardship, balancing luscious sweetness with exceptional purity and drive. A wine that bridges eras, old-world magic with a new-world polish, and still sings beautifully nearly three decades on.

Few names embody the grandeur and mystique of Tokaj quite like Oremus. With roots tracing back to the 16th century, this historic estate stands as one of Hungary’s true wine treasures, a symbol of Tokaj’s golden legacy and its enduring power to captivate. In 1993, Vega Sicilia, Spain’s most revered winery, acquired Oremus and ushered in a renaissance that combined centuries of Hungarian craftsmanship with modern precision and vision.
Nestled in the heart of Tokaj-Hegyalja, Oremus cultivates steep, south-facing vineyards on volcanic and loess soils, an ancient landscape shaped by the Bodrog and Tisza rivers. These unique conditions, together with the region’s autumn mists, create the perfect environment for Botrytis cinerea (noble rot), the natural magic behind Tokaji’s legendary Aszú wines.
Oremus works exclusively with native grape varieties, Furmint, Hárslevelű, Zéta, and Sárgamuskotály, each contributing its own nuance of structure, perfume, and longevity. Every Aszú berry is picked individually by hand, macerated in late-harvest base wine, and aged slowly in traditional 136-litre Hungarian oak casks deep within the estate’s labyrinthine cellars, where humidity and temperature remain constant year-round.
The range reflects the estate’s mastery of Tokaj’s many expressions, from the ethereal freshness of the Mandolás Furmint to the layered majesty of the Aszú 5 and 6 Puttonyos and the near-mythical Eszencia. In each, Oremus captures what makes Tokaj so singular: a balance of richness and light, sweetness and structure, heritage and renewal. It is not just one of the region’s finest producers; it is the living heartbeat of Tokaj’s centuries-old golden wine tradition.
