2023 Rosso Bolgheri 'Stupore', Campo alle Comete
Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy
From the glittering coast of Bolgheri, the 2023 Stupore captures everything that makes this corner of Tuscany so magnetic: warmth, elegance, and quiet sophistication. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it opens with heady aromas of ripe plum, wild herbs and dark chocolate, laced with tobacco leaf and a whisper of the sea breeze. On the palate, it’s silky and refined, the fruit deep and supple, wrapped in fine tannins and a gentle balsamic note that lingers long after each sip. This is modern Bolgheri: rich yet poised, effortlessly graceful.
For when: the evening deserves a little Italian magic.
Pairs with: slow-cooked ragu, grilled steak, or aged pecorino.
If this wine were a night sky, it’d be scattered with stars, luminous, layered, and full of wonder.
Born beneath the cypress-lined hills of Castagneto Carducci, Stupore is the work of visionary producer Antonio Capaldo at Campo alle Comete, a 26-hectare estate where imagination meets precision. The organically farmed vineyards, caressed by Tyrrhenian breezes and rooted in sand-rich soils, produce fruit of purity and finesse. Aged for nine months in French oak, this is Bolgheri craftsmanship at its most beguiling and with 95 points from Wine Enthusiast, it’s a star worth following.

Nestled at the foot of Castagneto Carducci in the heart of Bolgheri, Campo alle Comete is a 26-hectare estate that marries Tuscan tradition with dreamlike imagination. Its name, meaning “Fields and Comets”, evokes the landscape’s celestial beauty, when the Etruscan plains were once lit by stars and the occasional comet. Founded in 2016 by visionary vintner Antonio Capaldo, the estate reflects his passion for crafting expressive, contemporary wines that honour the spirit of Bolgheri’s sun-soaked coast.
The vineyards, surrounded by Mediterranean woodland and caressed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, are planted mainly to international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, each thriving in the region’s sandy, well-drained soils. Organic principles guide every stage of cultivation, ensuring purity of fruit and a natural expression of terroir. The result is wines of effortless depth, polished yet full of personality that balance Bolgheri’s signature richness with poise and freshness.
With labels illustrated by acclaimed artist Nicoletta Ceccoli, Campo alle Comete bottles not just wine, but imagination, a place where craftsmanship meets creativity. In 2022, the estate became a certified B Corporation (B Corp), further underscoring its commitment to sustainability, authenticity, and social responsibility. Today, Campo alle Comete stands as one of Bolgheri’s rising stars, producing wines that are as captivating as the skies that inspired their name.
'Stupore' translates as 'amazement' and is vinified to fully express the distinctive terroir of Bolgheri. The grapes were gently destemmed by a shaking motion, so that the whole
berries reached the sorting table for careful selection. The best fruit was transferred to either concrete vats or stainless steel tanks, where fermentation took place with selected yeasts under temperature-controlled conditions. The wine underwent malolactic conversion in French oak, resulting in a softer texture. The wine was matured for nine months in new French tonneaux and second passage, French oak barriques.
