East India Solera, Bodegas Lustau, 500ml
Deep mahogany with a glimmer of green-amber at the rim, Lustau’s East India Solera is a luxurious nod to the age of sail, rich, exotic, and full of story. The nose is a tapestry of dark caramel, maple syrup, and toasted walnut, layered with raisin, brown sugar, orange peel and a hint of polished wood. On the palate, it’s luscious and velvety, opening with prune and dried fig, flowing into flavours of burnt orange, molasses and sweet spice. Despite its opulence, a gentle acidity keeps the wine balanced, gliding into a long, warming finish with echoes of cocoa and candied fruit. Complex, nostalgic, and quietly thrilling.
For when: dessert is an excuse, not a requirement.
Pairs with: creamy cheeses, foie gras, nut tarts , or simply over ice with a slice of orange.
If this wine were: a story, it’d be a voyage at dusk, golden skies, salt air, and the scent of oak and spice below deck.
A blend of 80% Palomino (Oloroso) and 20% Pedro Ximénez, the East India Solera is aged for 12 years in separate soleras before being married and matured for a further three years in a small 45-cask system, a process inspired by the 17th-century Sherries that gained richness and harmony while crossing tropical seas.
Crafted in Bodega Emperatriz Eugenia in Jerez de la Frontera, this wine captures that maritime legacy in every drop, the depth of an Oloroso, the sweetness of PX, and the polish of time. A modern classic in Lustau’s range, it remains one of the world’s most evocative fortified wines: indulgent, balanced, and timelessly romantic.
