2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, Domaine Antonin Guyon
Silky, deep and effortlessly composed, the 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes from Domaine Antonin Guyon is a wine of quiet strength and refined beauty. Brilliant ruby with garnet hues, it opens with an expressive bouquet of red cherry, wild raspberry and rose petal, layered with hints of cedar, spice, and the earthy perfume of the Côte de Beaune’s limestone soils. The palate is both supple and structured with a graceful interplay of juicy red fruit, fine tannins and subtle oak. Notes of cranberry, black tea and clove emerge with air, leading to a long, poised finish that marries delicacy and depth in perfect measure. This is Volnay at its most articulate: elegant, pure and unwaveringly graceful.
For when: the occasion calls for something quietly profound.
Pairs with: roast duck, pigeon, mushroom ravioli, or a perfectly cooked côte de veau.
If this wine were a movement, it’d be a ballet, poised, disciplined, and full of emotion beneath the surface.
Domaine Antonin Guyon, based in Savigny-lès-Beaune, is one of Burgundy’s most respected family domaines, a beacon of consistency, precision and understated elegance. Founded in the 1960s by Antonin Guyon and now led by his sons Dominique and Michel, the estate spans over 40 hectares across the Côte d’Or, including several of the region’s most prestigious crus.
The Clos des Chênes vineyard, one of Volnay’s finest Premier Crus, sits high on the slope with thin, limestone-clay soils that produce wines of structure, perfume and exceptional longevity. The fruit is hand-harvested, gently destemmed, and fermented in small vats before ageing for around 15 months in fine French oak (approximately one-third new). The 2023 vintage delivers the hallmark Guyon balance of refinement and depth, a Volnay of purity, texture, and long, unhurried grace.
