2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Miocène, Domaine Grand Veneur
Deep crimson with a violet rim, this Châteauneuf is a masterclass in balance and power. The nose is generous and layered with ripe blackberry, black cherry, and plum interwoven with notes of thyme, lavender, cracked pepper and warm spice. On the palate, it’s plush yet structured, with a seamless core of dark fruit framed by fine, velvety tannins. The finish is long and resonant, laced with hints of cocoa, dried herbs and the sun-baked stones of the Rhône. Confident, composed and deeply satisfying - this is Châteauneuf with both muscle and grace.
For when: the evening’s slow, the plates are full, and the candles burn low.
Pairs with: roast lamb, slow-cooked beef, or wild mushroom ragoût.
If this wine were a character, it’d be the seasoned host - calm, generous, and utterly at ease.
Domaine Grand Veneur, founded in 1826 by the Jaume family, is one of the most respected names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a benchmark for consistency and quality in the southern Rhône. Today, the estate is run by Christophe and Sébastien Jaume, who continue their family’s tradition of crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines. The ‘Le Miocène’ cuvée, named after the ancient geological era that formed the region’s stony soils, blends Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre from old vines rooted in a mosaic of galets, sand and clay-limestone. Vinified traditionally and aged in oak for nuance and texture, the 2022 vintage captures the essence of Grand Veneur’s style: generous fruit, supple structure, and enduring elegance.
