2022 Angel Flower Pinot Noir, Pyramid Valley
Light garnet in the glass, delicate yet deep. The nose unfurls slowly, rose petals, wild thyme and a flicker of spice, all wrapped around a core of red cherry and crushed raspberry. The palate is weightless but purposeful, its silken texture carrying layers of red fruit, dried herbs and a whisper of mineral acidity. Fine, chalky tannins glide beneath the surface, giving shape to its perfume and poise. The finish lingers long, floral and savoury, like the echo of a summer meadow at dusk. Understated power, quiet beauty, this is Pinot Noir that speaks in poetry, not prose.
For when: the evening slows and the first candle flickers.
Pairs with: wild mushroom risotto, roast duck, or truffle pecorino.
Born from the dramatic limestone and clay slopes of North Canterbury’s Waikari estate, Pyramid Valley’s Angel Flower represents the pinnacle of their “Botanicals” collection. Each wine bears the name of the meadow plant most prominent in its vineyard block, a nod to the natural balance and biodiversity that define the site. Originally founded by Mike and Claudia Weersing in 2000 after a 15-year global search for the perfect terroir, Pyramid Valley has become synonymous with soulful, expressive winemaking. Under the stewardship of Steve Smith, Brian Sheth, and winemaker Huw Kinch, the legacy continues, wines that breathe of their place, alive with texture, purity, and spirit.
