2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Georges Lignier
Deep ruby in the glass, this Grand Cru Pinot Noir is both poised and seductive. Aromas of ripe cherry, wild strawberry and black tea rise with delicate hints of violets, truffle and fine spice. The palate is pure elegance with supple fruit wrapped in silken tannins, balanced by lively acidity and a quiet undercurrent of minerality. Graceful yet powerful, it unfolds slowly, revealing layers of red fruit, forest floor and savoury depth on an endlessly refined finish.
For when: the evening calls for something truly special.
Pairs with: roast pigeon, duck breast, or aged Comté.
If this wine were a feeling, it’d be calm certainty - understated brilliance that needs no introduction.
Domaine Georges Lignier, based in Gevrey-Chambertin, is one of Burgundy’s historic family domaines, now guided by Benoît Stehly, Georges’ great-nephew. The domaine’s holdings span 16 hectares across the Côte de Nuits, with deep-rooted vines in some of its most esteemed crus. Charmes-Chambertin, with its mix of clay and limestone soils, delivers the hallmark generosity of Gevrey’s grands crus - richness balanced by tension, and texture by grace. The 2021 vintage, shaped by a cool season and low yields, offers purity and finesse in abundance, a Grand Cru that whispers rather than shouts.
About the 2021 Vintage in Burgundy:
2021 in Burgundy was a vintage of resilience and refinement. Spring frost and a cool summer reduced yields dramatically, but what remained was fruit of remarkable concentration and purity. The wines show classical balance with bright acidity, moderate alcohol and vivid aromatics, recalling the elegance of vintages past. In the Côte de Nuits, the reds are finely structured and beautifully transparent, showcasing terroir with precision and grace. It’s a year that rewards patience, but even now, the best wines glow with quiet, timeless beauty.
