2010 Gran Reserva, Finca Nueva
Polished, poised and deeply satisfying, the 2010 Gran Reserva from Finca Nueva is Rioja done with pinpoint precision. Aromas of ripe red cherry, tobacco leaf, cedar and sweet spice rise from the glass, evolving into notes of leather, vanilla and dried herbs with air. The palate is beautifully layered with supple fruit framed by fine, velvety tannins and that telltale Rioja acidity that keeps everything fresh and elegant. Mature yet vibrant, it’s a wine that wears its ten years of ageing with effortless grace, gliding into a long, savoury finish dusted with spice and oak.
For when: you want an old soul that still knows how to dance.
Pairs with: roast lamb, grilled steak, or Manchego and good company.
If this wine were: a soundtrack, it’d be a mix of Miles Davis and Spanish guitar, smooth, classic, quietly seductive.
Finca Nueva is the second great project of Miguel Ángel de Gregorio, the visionary winemaker behind Finca Allende. Founded in 2004 in Briones, at the heart of Rioja Alta, Finca Nueva was conceived as a fresh expression of Rioja’s tradition - wines crafted with the same precision and terroir respect as Allende, but with a more playful, accessible spirit.
De Gregorio sources fruit from limestone and clay vineyards surrounding Briones, vinifying parcel by parcel and ageing the wines in a balanced mix of French and American oak to achieve harmony rather than heaviness. The Gran Reserva is the pinnacle of the range, produced only in exceptional vintages like 2010, a year of near-perfect balance between ripeness and acidity. The result is a wine that bridges past and present: a true Rioja Gran Reserva with classical depth and a clean, contemporary edge.
