2016 Château Lucas, Lussac-Saint-Émilion
Deep ruby with flashes of garnet, this polished Saint-Émilion satellite shows all the charm and structure of its famous neighbour. The nose opens with notes of ripe plum, black cherry and cassis, laced with cedar, tobacco and a whisper of spice. On the palate, it’s supple and poised, the blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc bringing plush fruit, fine tannins and a quiet, classical balance. Elegant, savoury and long on the finish, it’s a wine that speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression.
For when: dinner’s slow and the conversation’s deep.
Pairs with: roast lamb, beef bourguignon, or a truffle risotto.
If this wine were a person, it’d have old-school manners and a knowing smile.
Owned by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone, Château Lucas is one of Lussac-Saint-Émilion’s brightest stars. It's 18 hectares of limestone-clay vineyards produce three cuvées, with the flagship Château Lucas sourced from 12 hectares of prime slopes planted equally to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The high proportion of Cabernet Franc lends lift and aromatic precision, while traditional vinification and careful oak ageing ensure texture and balance. The 2016 vintage captures everything this estate does best: harmony, polish, and effortless Right Bank elegance.
